Where do I start?
Five years before he died, I asked my dad to come down to the recording studio. My father is Dave from Dave and the Nightingales who had the hit song “Don’t Stop The Carnival” 1977 and it stayed at number one of the black reggae charts for weeks and weeks. So popular was the music that I used it as my introduction card to whoever I met, “I guess as a child I wanted to impress whoever I met”
The song Don’t Stop The Carnival was in response to the Notting Hill Carnival riot in 1976, and the authorities were in talks to stop the carnival ever happening again... The record Don’t stop the carnival was very much a demonstration that all Black supported and brought awareness to the threat of Notting Hill Gate Carnival closure.
Anyway, dad released a few records in his time with his band Dave and The Nightingales, the band was booked nearly every Saturday night for 20 years. This was a vivid part of my childhood “never saw dad much on a Saturday night.” Davis Noel was, is and will always be a great father... And I for one am glad that he made it to paradise with Jesus.
Back to the story, to cut a long story short eventually, my dad gave his life to Christ and got baptised, and after a discussion, I managed to get him down to the studio. We agreed on a song that he liked, and by God’s grace I wrote the flavour I felt it needed ( and I secretly liked), my twists and turns and the offering is now complete. The song Closer is Now Released.
At the studio dad as Dad sang his lead vocals, (I remember thinking, at last, I am going to sing with dad) Now we have a duet which will be released 5 years after he died and went to heaven. Entitled “Closer”… A decade after initial recording…Look at God.
The whole thing is very surreal, especially as I started the project for him, and I dreamed that he would be on Earth when it was released. Now I Solicit the help of all to help me celebrate this song until it is an anthem on the lips of many. I believe it will help people to praise God with all the other songs currently out there that is used by heaven to put on the garment of praise. I pray it brings Joy to many and causes them to sing unto the Lord.
Finally, daddy has a gospel record. so Yes, I am excited.
Love you, dad…Phil, your second son of six children.
